Salt effects on seed germination and seedling emergence of two Acacia species

چکیده
Germination is the first stage in plant life cycle confronted with soil salinity and because of expanded saline areas around the world it is important to determine salt effects on this stage. In this study, we report an in vitro procedure for studying germination of Acacia spp. under salt stress with different NaCl and KCl concentrations. Seeds of Acacia tortilis (Forssk.) Hayne and Acacia oerfota (Forssk) Schweinf after subjected to sulphuric acid and boiling water, were grown in L2 medium under eight salinity levels (0, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250 and 300 mM) in a complete randomized design under laboratory conditions. Germination of both species decreased by increasing salinity. Both Acacia species showed higher tolerance to increased level of NaCl than to KCl.

A large body of research has documented the effect of seed priming ongermination, emergence and crop yield. In such research, seed priming has beenfound to have a positive, negative or no effect. Meta-analysis can help tosummarize and interpret a collection of experiments. The aim of this study was toconduct a meta-analysis to synthesize published data from studies addressing theeffect of seed ...
متن کاملSeed Priming Increases Germination and Seedling Quality in Antirrhinum, Dahlia, Impatiens, Salvia and Zinnia Seeds
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of hydropriming on seed germination and seedling growth of five different flower seed species (Antirrhinum, Dahlia, Impatiens, Salvia and Zinnia). Hydropriming (20oC, 24 h), surface dried or dried back afterwards, was found to increase germination percentage, seedling emergence and fresh and dry weight. In all species, the maximum advantage i...

متن کاملThe effect of exogenous silicon on seed germination and seedling growth of wheat cultivars under salt stress conditions
ABSTRACT- Seed germination and early seedling growth are critical stages for plants establishment and production, particularly under salinity conditions. Exogenous application of silicon (Si) can enhance germination as well as seedling growth. In this experiment, the effect of priming with Si (0, 0.75, 1.5 and 2.25 mM sodium silicate) on seed germination and seedling growth under NaCl (0, 100 a...
